Valentines Day is right around the corner . . .

. . . GIVEN UP ON YOUR NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS YET? I was sitting with a group of friends recently (yes drinking coffee) discussion how much weight everyone had gained this past holiday season and how most of their resolutions had already petered out.

I think the whole reason for the New Years Resolution hype was so that health clubs, and infomercial marketers could recoup all of the money that they lost during the holidays, because lets face it, nobody joins a gym or purchases weight loss equipment, potions or panacea’s during the holidays. They are too busy enjoying the bounty of this still great country. People want to not make good decisions without guilt and the New Years Resolution is the excuse for excess, as well as the cause of all of the depression and bad feeling that follow.

So why do resolutions fail? When someone comes in as a Neuro-Linguistic Programming—Hypnotherapy client. Our goal together is to change either behavior or the meaning of behavior.

So for example: someone says that they have a weight issue, they want to lose weight, the first thing that we do is change the statement from negative to positive. The linguistics part of NLP teaches us that the word lose has negative emotion connected to it. No one wants to lose anything or be a “loser.” It is difficult to lose weight when the sub-conscious mind is saying “No I don’t want to be a loser.” So we reframe their statement so that their goal is to shed pounds which is more positive or REGAIN YOU’RE IDEAL weight. This may seem like a trifle but remember that NLP has for more that 40 years been studying the effects of language upon both the person speaking it and also upon the person hearing it (and both the speaker and hearer may be you, but then hearing voices is a whole other issue, LOL).

Another reason for failure is that the person focuses upon what they won’t do, “I won’t eat sweets, I won’t eat after 8PM, I’ll give up beer. . .”, rather than focusing upon what they will do, “I’ll learn more about healthy food and how they should be combined while increasing my activity level and going to the gym three times per week . . .”

And being specific is the third key to goal setting. The more specific a goal is, the more the internal guidance system that is your unconscious mind will understand what is expected of it. You unconscious mind is efficient and tends to want to do the easiest things first. If your goal is to “lose weight” with out a specific amount of weight being stated, you may skip a meal get on the scale and weigh one pound less and your unconscious mind goes cool, resolution accomplished ! ! !

So when setting goals make sure to include the who, what, when, where, why, how, how often and how much or as Dr. Dave Dobson the famed hypnotist use to say: “Your other than conscious mind is very purposeful, not in the least bit rational and willing to do what ever it is programmed to do.”

Your mind has always been doing what you’ve unconsciously programmed it to do. The key is to learn the programming language and consciously begin to give it direction.

Direction is the fourth key to goal setting. My teacher Dr. Bandler, the father and co-founder of NLP says that the goal of NLP is “generative change.” So if your goal is prosperity we would focus on creating in your subconscious, a series of behaviors that might include certain amount of study, creating a mentor relationship, developing a mastermind group and developing new and different thinking skills that you’ve had before. Generative change is to set a direction, a group of thoughts and behaviors that go beyond the accomplishment of the goal and continue on for the rest of your life. The most important thing in NLP and in everyday life is to not limit but encourage the power of your unconscious mind.

You’ve heard of yoyo dieting, where a person loses 10 pounds, gains back 15. Loses 15 gains back 20 and continues this process over and over again. This occurs because when the goal is accomplished, what then? The return to the behaviors that caused them to have the weight issue in the first place. When we set a direction rather than just setting a goal the person will continue to work toward developing a healthier and healthier lifestyle rather than just achieving a finite goal.

I’ve spoke quite about weight loss because that is something that everyone understands, but the process is the same regardless of the goal. Neuro-Linguistic Programming is the computer language for operating your unconscious mind and I’ll bet you like me want the controls back.

Rapport: Why we like who we like.

Before we can work with someone or even truly communicate we must first establish an unconscious connection with them, we must establish rapport which is one of the fundamental principles of communications in the Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) model and is based upon the work of doctor Milton Erickson.

Tony Robbins often explains rapport as us feeling connected to people like us or people like the person we hope to become. To establish rapport quite often the first thing the practitioner does is to mirror the other person or client.

Mirroring is exactly what is described, the practitioner physically become a mirror image of the other person’s physiology. If they are sitting with their legs crossed, we cross our legs. If they have their right hand on their lap and their left arm on the arm of their chair. We place our left hand on our lap and right hand on the arm of the chair (a mirror image). The unconscious mind sees this mirror image and goes, “they’re just like me.” This is totally an unconscious process. Next time you go to a restaurant for dinner, after you’re done eating, look around at all the couples and notice how many couples are mirror images of each other.

ESTHER’S GARDEN SOUP from The pH Miracle for Weight Loss

This is a quick easy soup and one of my favorites for the winter. It’s borrowed from Nutrition Guru Dr. Robert Young’s book The pH Miracle for weight Loss.


3 stalks celery

1/8 red onion

Small clove of garlic

1/4 cup lemon juice

2 cups warm water

3 tbs olive oil

1 tsp dried sage

1/2 tsp real salt

1 small scoop or stevia power.

Blend all ingredients until smooth and then pour into a large bowl.

Use 3 or 4 or the following vegis to make a colorful soup:

* 1/2 cup chopped red pepper

1/4 cup Jicams, grated

* 1 small Carrot, chopped

1 cup zucchini, grated

* 1/2 cup parsnips grated

1/2 cup chopped cauliflower

* 1/2 cup broccoli, chopped

* 1 avocado

Cheyennen or ginger for flavor

* these are the four vegetables that I use

Add vegetables of choice to soup, stir well.

Add 1 avocado, in bite sized pieces.

Add ginger or Cheyenne.

Garnish with parsley, cilantro, green onion or chives. This is a wonderful quick, healthy raw soup, just what the doctor orders for those cold winter nights. I usually make a double batch because this is so good and goes quickly.

You're gonna be in Love with February

My fathers birthday is February 14, 1914, and his Briar Hill nickname is "Fourteener.” So every February I get really excited thinking about his party. And that’s probably why I planned some really exciting things for February, the month of Love.

Just in time for Valentines Day and for the first time ever I’ll be teaching the NLP PATTERNS OF FLIRTATION workshop on Friday, February 10th. This program is based upon a program developed by Dr. Richard Bandler years ago. This is not seduction, it is the skills that allow comfortable open communication to occur between two people. This is an interactive workshop and is $49, a bargain at any price.

We’ve got SHARE THE STILLNESS free meditation events going on Sunday’s January 29th, February 12th and February 26th at 9:00AM.

For those of you that have loved ones that wish to become free of tobacco we’ve still got two NLP-2B-FREE of tobacco AND HEALTHY 3 hour smoking cessation workshops which will take place on Saturday January 28th and Saturday February 25th at 12:30.
